Death Valley - What a Good Idea!
LAST SATURDAY, THE RIDE WAS TO BE FROM BMW MOTORCYCLES OF LAS VEGAS ON SOUTH TENAYA TO OATMAN, AZ; HOWEVER, THE GROUP DECIDED THAT DEATH VALLEY WAS A GOOD IDEA.THEY WERE RIGHT; IT MADE FOR ONE GREAT SATURDAY.
MOST OF US DID NOT KNOW ONE ANOTHER BUT IT REALLY DIDN’T MATTER.
For most it was a full days ride but, for a few, the tribulations of busy lives got in the way and cut their ride short. You know; riding part of a beautiful spring day is entirely better than not riding at all. We did miss the riders that left early but not for long; the freedom, the wind in your face and the magic of motorcycling in one of the most amazing places on the planet was like magnetism – pulling us along.
The rumored temperature was 84 degrees – it was 101 at Furnace Creek. A rude reminder of the weather we will experience very soon in Las Vegas. Beating the heat is an art in Death Valley and one particular LT 1600 couple had it figured – they had – THE ICE BOX SADDLE BAG. It was full of cold beverages and snacks. Way to go guys! Impressive!
We left out the backdoor of Vegas to Shoshone stopping for breakfast and got acquainted with one another. Afterward; off we went following Bad Water Road to the ultimate goal of Scotty’s Castle. Along the way we must have passed hundreds of motorcycle riders with most giving the “biker wave” as they went in the opposite direction. My guess is about 200 – 300 riders of all kinds. There is a kinship regardless of the kind of bike you ride but our groups preference is the engineering and artistry of Bavarian Motor Works (BMW). We like to think they are superior. Maybe they are? Ya – BMW’s; they really are…SUPERIOR.
Scotty’s Castle closes at 4:15 and we made it to the main gate at just before 4:00. The Park Ranger let us in to spend about 15 self satisfying and glorious minutes basking in the accomplishment of reaching our intended goal. It wasn’t much time but enough to enjoy reaching the goal, grabbing a quick drink and we were off again east towards 95 and Beatty, Nevada.
GAS IN BEATTY, CHILI DOG’S ON MAIN STREET, ICE CREAM FOR A FEW OF US AND ON TO VEGAS. NOT EVERYONE STAYED FOR THE FULL DOSE OF CHILI DOG’S AND ICE CREAM BUT EVERYONE ENJOYED THE DAY.
We made new riding friends
We enjoyed one great Saturday ride to a fabulous place – Death Valley
We talked about how to make next months ride even better
We decided to go north, in May, to the St. George area for another Saturday motorcycling experience
The plan is to post the next 3 months rides well in advance so everyone has a chance to calendar the day and “make the time”.
Three of us committed, that in a year, we would do it again and celebrate by enjoying those world famous Chili Dog’s in Beatty, Nevada
